Artistic Ideas and How To's

Tahn's Painting Surface Tip I

Earlier this year I discovered a wonderful surface for painting with Acrylics.  I had made myself a travel art kit since I never had time at home to paint.  I did not have small canvas at the time but I had a pad of Bristol paper.  The smoothness with which my paint flowed on this paper was amazing.  My paintings turned out beautiful with no canvas grain to be seen through the paint.  I highly recommend Bristol as an alternative surface for Acrylic painting.

Tahn's Painting Surface Tip II

Also earlier this year I discovered a new kind of canvas board.  The canvas was thin and the board was thick like a stretched canvas.  It was interesting to use.  It takes a little more paint to thoroughly cover it but when drawing on your image it felt almost like drawing on paper which greatly increased my ability to draw finite details to be painted.  I still prefer regular canvas, but for specific projects that need to be very finely detailed I highly suggest this canvas board.  I will certainly be using it again in such circumstances.

Tahn's Painting Technique I
If your are looking for greater texture in your painting, try painting with a pallet knife instead of  a brush.  It takes some getting used to but you will get uniquely textured and vibrant color.  My favorite pallet knife is small and diamond shaped.

Tahn's Fixative/Varnish Tip I
If you don't have access to spray fixative/varnish to keep your charcoal/soft pencil drawings from smudging, you can get by with hairspray.
